BACKGROUND & CONTEXT

In this study we consider a Mars surface mission of ~500 days with a crew of 4, living in a habitat of about 1200 ft2 interior floor area. The study served as the foundation for Offworld Habitat Wall Section commissioned by Powerhouse.

  • Habitat will be constructed autonomously in 2075–80

  • It likely may not be the first habitat on Mars; but could viably be the first 100% ISRU-constructed habitat

  • Infrastructure will be available on the surface

SITE SELECTION & RESOURCE UTILIZATION

SITE SELECTION & RESOURCE UTILIZATION

SITE SELECTION & RESOURCE UTILIZATION

To select a site for the habitat, consideration was given to regolith constructability and composition; accessibility of resources such as water-ice, metallics, carbonaceous species, and rare earth minerals; proximity to scientific sites of interest; solar availability; and topography, especially as it pertains to ease of construction, launch/landing, and traversal.

HABITAT CONSTRUCTION & WALL SYSTEM

HABITAT CONSTRUCTION & WALL SYSTEM

The habitat is conceived as two structurally distinct but coordinated systems. First an ISRU shell acting as a compression-dominant shielding structure, and second the interior inflatable—which remains the primary pressure boundary for the habitat.

The site undergoes multiple stages of construction, increasingly expanding the number of modules as crewed missions increase in size and frequency.

Once the interior habitat module is deployed it connects directly with the integrated transition nodes within the regolith shell. An adjustable connection point using capture channels creates the sealed point of transition between the inflatable bulkhead and the transition node bulkhead. Site ISRU processes feed into identified utility ports on the exteriormost bulkhead of the habitat module. Utility lines can be pre-outfitted in more rigid and permanent alignments within the transition module, running along the walls for access in need of maintenance.

HABITAT DESIGN

The site would undergo multiple stages of construction, increasingly expanding the number of modules as crewed missions increase in size and frequency. Autonomous construction rovers and robotics will conduct a majority of the construction over time, with crew available remotely or on-site at various stages to ensure the integrity and safety of the completed modules before habitation.
